Body Unwinding workshop, AGM
2008
Written following a short
workshop given at the AGM of the APNT (Association of Physical & Natural
Therapists), March 2008 (click here for APNT website)
Apparently, there should have been well over twenty in our group but I think I’m right in saying we were eventually eighteen. This meant that we had the good fortune of an even number of bodies for practice purposes and just about enough space for us to move around our tables without bumping into each other. I partnered the lovely Jess Bale, editor of InTouch (APNT’s online newsletter), who skilfully reduced me to a jelly-like state before convincing me that I really did want to write this article … ?
I chose the Body Unwinding workshop because I am completely drawn to anything to do with the fascia/myofascia and my afternoon, fronted by Jan Trewartha, was nothing short of amazing. I think we all had a little bit of insight as to what body unwinding is all about but there is no real substitute for an actual hands-on experience is there?
Condensing the intros, Jan briefly outlined to us how her life has evolved from SRN to Therapist and Trainer, thanks to considerable disillusionment with the NHS and just a little help from the odd few years on the other side of the planet. In her work as a massage therapist, Jan had become increasingly frustrated with knots and adhesions in some of her clients that either wouldn’t go away at all or went away briefly before returning. I suppose we can all relate to this dilemma in one form or another and, as a relative novice to the world of natural therapies, I found it somewhat reassuring to learn that I’m not alone with such problems.
Jan went on to explain how both physical and emotional traumas can become caught up in our truly amazing wonder-web of fascia and how she has learned to sense them actually moving under the skin, “Like a bag of snakes”.
Because of the myofascia’s interconnections and complexities, problems that occur in one part of the body often manifest themselves in a totally different area. As a simple example, abdominal surgery will obviously result in scarring etc. in the site of the operation but it may also cause a problem say in a leg and or an arm and psychological issues can manifest themselves just about anywhere on the body.
The whole subject is so truly fascinating and far reaching, that our two hours was barely enough time to even scratch the stratum layer. Despite that, Jan very patiently explained how to intuitively scan a client’s body for problems by combining good grounding, good intention and good connection. We watched intently as she demonstrated the physical process of encouraging the subcutaneous fibres etc. to realign, which requires no more than a feather touch combined with stacks of patience and even more intuition. We obviously couldn’t get too complicated or involved but we each practised the scanning process on our partners and then the actual ‘body unwinding’ technique on just the arms.
I apologise for my lack of literary ability to put across just how enlightening and special my afternoon was but I can tell you that I found the whole experience intriguing and emotionally evocative. I can also tell you that as much, if not more pleasure was gained from applying this wonderful form of treatment as through receiving it.
So finally, I’d just like send a huge thank you to Jan, a huge thank you to Jess and a huge bundle of love and hugs to everyone.
