Specialist training for qualified Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork therapists only

Teacher: Jan Trewartha

Take your work with scars and adhesions to the next level, learning not only how to work with some of the more complex scars today’s surgeries create, but how to then integrate that work at whole body level. This provides a more holistic and thorough session for the client, leaving them with a deeper level of connected mobility.

Attendees must have the following:

1. A working understanding of, and be very comfortable with using the first nine ScarWork techniques.

2. If you have been qualified as a manual therapist for less than ten years, then you should have a minimum of two years’ clinical experience as a ScarWork therapist behind you before attending this course; this should include working regularly with scars and feeling comfortable that you are able to use ScarWork with a fair amount of confidence and understand how the body responds to it. This is because some of the techniques are designed to deeply integrate the body, allowing distortion, torsion, and tissue displacement to be addressed; therefore, students need to be able to handle the body intelligently and with awareness. Certain modalities with longer initial training may be exempt from this requirement. If you have any doubts about your level of experience please contact Jan direct: jan@bodyinharmony.org.uk to discuss.

Although this course primarily addresses surgical interventions on women, we also discuss male issues, e.g. prostate surgery, and welcome male scar models for all relevant surgeries.

This is a three-day course combining theory and clinical practice sessions, enabling the students to apply their learning in a safe, supervised setting***. The course covers a broad spectrum of relevant theory, discussion and practical (student pair practice and two Clinical Practice sessions), including:

  • Revision of particularly useful ScarWork techniques within the context of pelvic and abdominal scarring.
  • Revision of Caesareans and Diep Flaps and how to work with them.
  • Cosmetic surgeries – Fleur de Lys, 360 lift, Abdominoplasty, Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), and different liposuctions; what the surgeries involve, the potential issues that may occur, and how to work with the results.
  • Working with the body after mesh removal.
  • Clearing adhesions from the anterior iliac crests (ASIS).
  • Revision of epidural treatment.  How to find and treat the epidural site.
  • Repositioning the mons pubis when tissue is slumped/adhered.
  • ‘Vaginal column’ lift.
  • Working with abdominal and full body torsion.
  • Local and full body integration.
  • Addressing deep adhesions.
  • The broader, fascial work taught can be used anywhere on the body; these are tools you can use with confidence to restructure the tissue locally and globally once you have worked on the scar, and create better integration, posture, ROM and functionality.
  • Although this course focuses on the pelvis and abdomen, its broader reach is very much on following the tissue and working with the full body results of scars and adhesions. For example, with pelvic scars we might look at associated abdominal congestion and upper thoracic tension, working to free up the front body which is often contracted due to the scarring. This often assists emotional expression and is a huge relief to the client.
  • *** PLEASE NOTE that although we work hard to find ‘scar models’ who have had a variety of surgeries, some of the more complex ones will not necessarily be represented in the Clinical Practice sessions.

TESTIMONIALS (note that these student feedbacks are given for the two-day courses from 2023; the course has now been expanded to three days to accommodate more information and more clinical practice opportunity):

“The content of the course is exceptional and I can’t wait to use in my practice.  It’s always good to meet and talk with other therapists who practice different modalities”. Sue Harrod, February 2023

“The course has given me extra techniques to incorporate into my existing ScarWork and MFR therapies.  I feel more confident to use these techniques and to further help my clients”. Tina Mullan, February 2023

“As a male it is a huge privilege to be allowed to work on the female pelvis, an area in so much need of support.  This course ensures the appropriate level of skill is acquired.” Nick Whiting, February 2023

“I feel significantly more confident to work on a range of abdomens – knowing the significance of light work vs deep work.  I really feel I know I can work on anyone.” Student, February 2023

“The pelvic and abdominal adhesions course is truly a game changer. It has given me the confidence to play, listen, investigate, and feel and I am so excited to take what I have learned back to my clients to support them. The way you teach, your passion and skill and love for what you do puts your courses above and beyond and the groups of therapists you attract are always incredible.” Louisa Sisson 2023
